Culture and Community
Proximity
Proximity changes what we are capable of knowing. You can study a community, read the data, understand the language, and still be too far away to recognize what a decision may actually cost the people who have to live with it.
That is why the empty seats in a room matter. What is missing may not only be demographic. It may be a different experience, discipline, culture, way of thinking, relationship to power, or proximity to the people most affected.
The goal is to make the room capable of understanding more.
01
What perspective, experience, community, or way of knowing is missing?
02
Difference includes more than demographics. It can also include discipline, geography, class, faith, lived experience, knowledge, proximity to power, and the questions someone has learned to ask.
03
Who will actually live with what happens next? People should not become so distant that their experience can be reduced to a category, report, or statistic.
04
A difficult decision may still be necessary. But the people making it should be close enough to understand what it sets in motion, and connected enough that the consequences can reach the room that created them.
Culture in Practice
Cities do not develop culture only through institutions, venues, or campaigns. Culture is also shaped by the people a community chooses to notice, invest in, connect, and make room for.
Heard First was built from that belief: that creatives are not simply participants in a city's culture. They are among the people creating it. And when people are connected to the right community, they can often carry more than they could alone.
Work with Sharona
Sharona speaks with leaders, teams, churches, founders, and institutions about the cultures they are creating, the people those cultures make room for, and what becomes possible when difference is treated as something to build with rather than something to manage.
Her work can help a room think more clearly about belonging, proximity, trust, community, leadership, and the conditions that allow people to contribute more fully without disappearing into the culture around them.
We do this together.
